Gabriel and Deborah are all both well and continue to serve the people of Luwero tirelessly. Priscilla celebrated her first birthday on 17th April. Although she suffered occasionally from colds and chest infections she has made good progress and, in Deborah’s words, ‘she has started going to school 2 days per week’, as she accompanies Deborah who currently works part-time at the primary school.
The new academic school year commenced on 22nd February following elections which took place reasonably peacefully on 18th February. Approximately 500 children are attending the primary school (a slight drop from last year). The secondary school pupil numbers have increased to approximately 250 students. The present term ends on Friday 13th May.
Construction work on the church, new primary school dormitory block and reinforced concrete underground water storage tanks is in progress. Roofing the new church building commenced in April. Foundations for new dormitory block are under construction.
Between 16th and 20th May the 6th annual Pastor and Church Leader’s conference takes place. The theme chosen by the local pastors for this year’s conference is “Heaven and Hell”. As in previous years two church leaders from Scotland, Stuart Smith and Ernie Bayton, will be attending and speaking twice daily at the conference. Gabriel and a team of pastors are overseeing the local arrangements. Funding for Bibles, both in Luganda and English, has been generously donated for the conference and youth camp later in August. Normally upwards of 500 delegates attend the conference which will include a contingent of pastors and their wives from Kenya.
In parallel with the pastor and church leader’s conference a daily children’s club will be run by a team of volunteers from Partick Trinity Church of Scotland, Glasgow where Stuart Smith is the minister. Based on last years’ experience some 300 children are expected to attend. Young people from the church at Luwero will help lead the children’s club.
Justina Namusu
Our new nurse (pictured left) at Luwero’s clinic is Justina. She began work at the clinic in November 2015 attending to minor injuries and the medical needs of children at the schools as well as addressing health issues faced by people in the local community. The nurse at Luwero is part funded by a church in Glasgow.
Justina provides basic health care, carries out a range of tests including those for malaria, HIV aids, pregnancy and pre-natal care, vaccination programmes, etc.
She replaces Elizabeth, our previous nurse, who left for further training.
